About the Role

Scientific interns join a primary research group under a professor’s supervision. Collaboration with other groups may be possible by mutual agreement. Not every group can host interns: appointments depend on the host’s interest, sufficient salary funds and formal approval from Academic Affairs. This is paid employment, not a fully funded scholarship. Participation does not provide preferential treatment for admission to ISTA’s PhD programme.

Requirements

  • Be studying towards, or be a recent graduate of, a bachelor’s or master’s degree in natural sciences, computer sciences, mathematics or a related discipline.
  • Be available to conduct the internship at ISTA for at least two months.
  • Have an interest in a research group’s work and be willing to discuss it with the group leader and team.
  • Have a good command of English, ISTA’s working language.
  • You cannot be employed or funded elsewhere while employed as an ISTA scientific intern.
  • Eligibility is assessed individually after application under ISTA’s Research Security policy.

Confirmed Benefits

  • An employment contract with ISTA and a minimum salary of EUR 1,583 gross per month.
  • No application or processing fees at any stage.
  • After an employment offer, information on applying for a visa from abroad and the necessary supporting documents from ISTA.

What Applicants in Nigeria Should Know

  • Nigerian applicants may apply under the general eligibility criteria, but acceptance remains subject to individual screening. This is an on-site opportunity in Austria, not a remote internship from Nigeria.
  • Research Security restrictions cover affiliations with EU-sanctioned institutions, including affiliations within the previous 12 months. They may also affect applicants currently based in certain countries who intend to work in higher-risk research areas. The affected country list is not supplied, so residence-based clearance for Nigeria cannot be confirmed.
  • As a Nigerian applicant outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, you will need to apply for a visa to work and reside legally in Austria. Visa guidance and ISTA documents follow an offer; visa sponsorship, visa-fee coverage and relocation funding are not explicitly promised.
  • Campus accommodation costs extra and is subject to availability. Externally funded visiting students follow a separate arrangement and receive no ISTA salary.

Required Documents

  • A CV in PDF format listing relevant experience and education history.

How to Apply

  1. Identify a suitable research group or staff scientist and check that your interests match their work.
  2. Email the group leader or staff scientist directly with a short introduction, your motivation, an attached PDF CV and possible internship dates. The proposed start must be at least two months ahead.
  3. If the host is interested, follow their instructions to provide further information through the application portal.
  4. Complete portal registration at least two months before starting. Applications are rolling with no central deadline; ISTA recommends making initial contact at least four months ahead.
  5. Submit complete, relevant information. Incomplete or irrelevant applications will not be processed.

Application Tips

Preparation advice: target groups whose research closely matches your academic background and explain that connection in your email. Relevant research experience and transferable technical skills can strengthen your approach. You may contact multiple groups, but tailor each message. Allow at least four months before your preferred start date, as ISTA recommends. Only selected candidates receive replies.

Eligibility depends on the employer’s full requirements. An application or sponsorship offer does not guarantee a visa or employment.
